An Elegant Solution

February 25 2010
[ Fiction : Suspense/Sci-fi/ ]

By Carl Macek from an original idea by Stan Slavutsky

The military helicopters approached the isolated island around midday. Spiro Mizrahi was waiting on his family’s private helipad to greet his unexpected visitors. Still, he wasn’t all that surprised when the small delegation, led by one of the Government’s Deputy Directors of Environmental Affairs, disembarked. He had fielded these impro ... read more>>>

A Lesson Learned

January 31 2010
[ Non-fiction : Short Stories/ ]

©Copyright Jeannette Gardner Jan.31/10

I was in my 20’s and living alone in a huge two bedroom apartment above a warehouse in an industrial area, with a view of a highway. Yes, it was lonely there at times. It happened one night when I felt adventurous. My friends were busy so I thought I’d venture out alone in my 69 Austin Mini.

Off I went on the highway downtown to a bar where I’ve ... read more>>>

Where do you get your material?

January 10 2010

A fellow writer on here asked me why my story was listed as non fiction. The fact is that almost all of my stories on here are listed as non fiction. That is because they are about experiences that I have personally had. Children of Fate, even the most boring parts of it is about my life. There really is a person out there that is claiming to be my brother.
The Seven Pennies and the Pennies are ... read more>>>

A DIFFERENT CHRISTMAS STORY

December 22 2009

A DIFFERENT CHRISTMAS

by A. J. Angerstein
Dec. 21, 2009

Martha sat at the top of the viaduct. She stayed away from the others as much as she could. Each time she went to the bathroom, she gathered up her tattered blanket and took it with her. She had not reached the point of going out to the corner and holding up a sign as the others had. After all, she had her pride and a few fruit bars ... read more>>>

Visits From a Dark Entity

Even today, 30 years after the terrifying visits ended, I become fearful about telling anyone what happened in that house or discussing it in too much detail. I think, “What if my speaking or thinking about it brings it back?” But, here I am telling you about it, taking my chances. As Mark Twain said, “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear - not absence of fear.” And so, I’ll share my sto ... read more>>>

Sweet Lies

July 5 2009
[ Non-fiction : Romance/Poetry/ ]

I don’t know now what to feel
I’m losing grip of everything that’s real
Going round in circles
Unkeeping each mess.

I’m not sure of how to react
I don’t even know what’s in tact
You’re driving me crazy now
Slowly I’m going down.

I need to know what’s going on
For I may be ready when you’re gone
Make it clear so that I can see
And make ready what’s left of me.

Hold me close for on ... read more>>>

FOG?

October 13 2009
[ Non-fiction : War/Conflict/Survival/Health/ ]

FOG is what they call the confusion when someone with fibromyalgia gets fuzzy headed. You see, they can't decide if I actually have Fibromyalgia, or if all the hurt i go thru daily is caused by a tick bite that occurred when i was very young and they didn't know what Lyme disease was. And then of course, there is always the never ending "well, it could just be depression" as if hurting on a consta ... read more>>>

It Came in With the Tide

May 29 2009
[ Fiction : Humour/Short Stories/Romance/ ]

It was a Tuesday morning, the second day of Lynn and her daughters two week California vacation.

“Would you like to go to the beach today, Michelle?”

Sure Mom, I wouldn’t mind going to the beach everyday of our vacation.

“Okay, get your things together, don’t forget the tanning Lotion, the sun is really bright today.”

When they reached the beach the tide was receding, the tide was g ... read more>>>

I know....

April 8 2009
[ Non-fiction : Religion/Spirituality/ ]

I know that there is freedom of religion and I also know that there is freedom of speech. I know that no matter who you are, or what you religion, or the color of your skin... that we ALL face racism in different degrees. Being a born again Christian I do face a lot of discrimination. I know that when I speak about my faith people tend to not listen and tend to want to run from it or to blame G ... read more>>>

Teach Me, Change Me,
Mold Me to Fit
Darlene Pharris

My soul longs to know you better,
I hunger and I thirst for your ways,
Teach me, Change me, Mold me to Fit.

Guide my steps, light my way
I look to you, Dear Lord,
For the answers to my prayers
Teach me, Change me, Mold me to Fit.

Take charge of my ways,
Take charge of my thoughts,
Take charge of my words
Teach me, Change ... read more>>>

Language Barriers

[ Non-fiction : Humour/ ]

I had been sent to Iceland to do a tour with the military. There were two separate exercises, one the defense of Iceland and the other was a Partnership for Peace exercise. The Partnership for Peace exercise was simulating several natural disasters which had occurred simultaneously. The nations involved worked together to treat simulated casualites and provide for the needs of the citizens effect ... read more>>>

A True Olympian

August 20 2008
[ Non-fiction : Sports/Memorable Encounters/Travel/ ]

Incident#2
Olympic cyclist

He wasn’t exactly an Olympian to start with, but he definitely had the Olympic spirit in him. What else could have spurred him to assemble a bicycle with 5 rings in the shape of the Olympic rings, and cycle more than 100km from the neighboring city of Tianjin to join the Olympics?

It was my first day joining the world in Beijing for the Olympics. Handed with scor ... read more>>>

Encountering the press!

August 22 2008
[ Non-fiction : Memorable Encounters/Travel/ ]

Having run out of places to go, im reduced to scouring travel websites and browsing through travel guide books for any places of interest. If it wasn’t the Forbidden City, it was Tiananmen square. Otherwise, it was the great wall and the summer palace. No doubt they are cultural treasures and a sight to behold, but going there a third time simply didn’t hold as much excitement anymore. Moreover, t ... read more>>>

Wirhstanding Time

January 24 2010

The younger girl looked over at her aunt. "Why did you not cry; when you said goodbye. I don't understand, you had a smile on your face." As the older woman started the station wagon she looked over at the concerned 14 year old. After all, he was her favorite uncle, and she would miss him terribly, as they all would. "He is going to another country, far away to fight a war. A war we did not start, ... read more>>>
